4th Stop: Hodgkinson Street and Smith Street by NOST

Now the tour will make its way to the Gas and Fuel depot wall on the corner of Hodgkinson Street and Smith Street. As you can see, NOST has been written over something in the background. This something was painted in 1986 by Melbourne artists Eve Glenn and Megan Evans and took two and a half years to complete. In Megan’s post above, it is obvious that a lot of hard work was put into the mural, which included interviewing hundreds of women. There has been a story of these women on this wall for over 30 years that were merely wiped away by the vandalism. Ms. Evans commented reported felling sad and angry for the women whose stories were on the wall, and was even contacted by some of these women. NOST is someone who is known for painting over other peoples’ works, and some may say it is disrespectful while others look at it as getting your name up and becoming well known by the public.
