Stop 1: CBD

The first stop in this tour is located in the CBD, where Melbourne’s street art journey began, inspired by the New York street art culture. Young artists emerged frequently in an attempt to paint the city in their colour. Graffiti was mostly related to political agendas and anti-establishment artwork at the time. Artists, who had no money and did not have a say in how the country was run, took to the streets to make their voices heard. The CBD held particular significance due to its central location, which was quite effective in publicising anti establishment political views and agendas to the masses. Over the years, street art in the CBD shifted gears encompassing higher aesthetic value as the shift from counter to modern culture became more widely appreciated and accepted. The CBD became the heart of lively and energetic murals, painted in beautiful colours.
