Memoirs of a Geisha

This is an intricate stencil of a geisha and a starwars ninja warrior. The geisha holds a gun in one hand and a fan in the other. Next to her is what looks like a Japanese warrior. The image holds a varied amount of iconic symbolism. I enjoy the juxtaposition of the weaponry and the fan being held by the same geisha. It seems to pose a strike against the sexist concepts that generally revolve around geishas. The starwars ninja warrior has a type of astronaut helmet and a classic ninja costume, making the piece seem comical. I appreciate a sense of humor in street art, mostly because I find that it helps pedestrians take a moment to appreciate their day or the streets they are walking on. I enjoy the tagging about the geisha because it shows how fickle the whole environment of street art can be. The stenciling on the geisha must have taken hours of time, and the tag most likely took one minute. I don’t find the tagging to be annoying, though, I think it creates an aesthetic conversation between two artists that is made available to the public.
